Your First Massage: What to Expect, Wear and Say

A calm spa reception with a wooden counter and woven lamp

A first massage comes with a lot of quiet questions people feel awkward asking. How much do I undress? Do I have to talk? What if I fall asleep? This guide answers them.

Before you arrive

  • Arrive about 10 minutes early so you're not rushing in from traffic.
  • Eat lightly — a big meal right before isn't comfortable lying face down.
  • A shower beforehand is a kind courtesy, but not essential.

What to wear

Wear whatever's comfortable. For oil-based massages you'll undress in private to your comfort level — many people keep underwear on — and you're covered by towels throughout. For Thai massage, you stay in loose clothing.

What to tell your therapist

  • Any injuries, pain or recent surgery
  • Pregnancy
  • Allergies (especially to oils or nuts)
  • Pressure preference — and that you can change your mind mid-session

During the massage

You don't need to talk. Silence is normal. If anything feels uncomfortable — pressure, temperature, music — say so. Falling asleep is a compliment.

After

Get up slowly, drink water, and give yourself a gentle evening. If you had a firmer massage, mild soreness the next day is common.

Which treatment for a first visit?

We usually suggest Swedish massage. Read our Swedish massage guide to see why.
